✈️ Airport Transit Visa Rules for Indian Passport Holders

Connecting through a foreign airport? Even if you never leave the secure transit area, Indian passport holders may need a transit visa depending on the airport.

This page covers transit visa requirements at major international hubs commonly used on routes from India. Rules vary by airport, transit zone, and what other visas you hold. "Airside transit" means staying within the airport's international transit area without passing through immigration or border control.

Always verify rules with the airline and the embassy before booking. Transit rules change frequently, and airlines enforce them at check-in — you may be denied boarding if you don't meet the requirements.

Germany flag Frankfurt Airport (FRA)

  • Country: Germany
  • Transit Zone: Schengen

Default Rule

Indian passport holders require an Airport Transit Visa (ATV) for airside transit through Frankfurt unless an exemption applies.

Exemptions

You do not need a transit visa if you:

  • Hold a valid visa or residence permit issued by a Schengen member state
  • Hold a valid visa or residence permit issued by the United States, Canada, or Japan
  • Hold a valid visa or residence permit issued by the United Kingdom or Ireland
  • Hold a valid visa issued by Andorra, Monaco, or San Marino
  • Are a family member of an EU/EEA citizen exercising freedom of movement rights
  • Hold a diplomatic or service passport

⚠️ Terminal Change: If your connection requires changing terminals via landside (outside the secure area), a full Schengen short-stay visa is required regardless of exemptions above.

📋 Booking Note: Exemptions apply only when both flights are on the same booking (single PNR). Separate tickets may require a Schengen visa even for airside transit.

France flag Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG)

  • Country: France
  • Transit Zone: Schengen

Default Rule

Indian passport holders require an Airport Transit Visa (ATV) for airside transit through Paris CDG unless an exemption applies.

⚠️ Terminal Change: Connections within Terminal 2E and 2F can be made airside. All other terminal changes (e.g., Terminal 1 to Terminal 2) require passing through French border control — a full Schengen short-stay visa is needed.

📋 Booking Note: Exemptions apply only when both flights are on the same booking (single PNR). Separate tickets may require a Schengen visa even for airside transit.

ℹ️ Note: Air France connections within Terminal 2E/2F are the most common airside transit scenario for India–Europe routes.

United Kingdom flag London Heathrow Airport (LHR)

  • Country: United Kingdom
  • Transit Zone: UK Landside
  • Max Airside Transit: 24 hours

Default Rule

Indian passport holders require a Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) to transit through London Heathrow without passing through UK border control.

Exemptions

You do not need a transit visa if you:

  • Hold a valid visa issued by the United States, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand
  • Hold a valid residence permit issued by the United States (I-551 / Green Card)
  • Hold a valid uniform-format residence permit issued by an EU/EEA country
  • Hold a valid Irish biometric visa (marked 'BC' or 'BC BIVS')
  • Hold a valid residence permit issued by Canada (issued after 28 June 2002)
  • Hold a diplomatic or official passport

⚠️ Terminal Change: Most terminal changes at Heathrow require passing through UK border control (landside). If your connection requires a terminal change, you will likely need a Visitor in Transit visa rather than a DATV.

📋 Booking Note: DATV exemptions apply only when you have a confirmed onward flight departing the same day or within 24 hours.

ℹ️ Note: The UK uses a separate DATV system — do not confuse with Schengen ATVs. Heathrow Terminal 5 (British Airways hub) and Terminal 2 (Star Alliance) handle most transit traffic.

United Arab Emirates flag Dubai International Airport (DXB)

  • Country: United Arab Emirates
  • Transit Zone: Non-Schengen
  • Max Airside Transit: 24 hours

Default Rule

Indian passport holders do not require a transit visa for airside transit through Dubai if they have a confirmed onward ticket departing within 24 hours.

Exemptions

You do not need a transit visa if you:

  • No transit visa is required for airside transit with a confirmed onward ticket within 24 hours
  • 96-hour transit visa available on arrival for passengers with a confirmed onward ticket (fee applies)

⚠️ Terminal Change: Dubai International has Terminals 1, 2, and 3. Terminal 3 is exclusively for Emirates. Transit between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 can be done airside. Transit involving Terminal 2 may require immigration clearance.

📋 Booking Note: For airside transit without a visa, both flights should ideally be on the same booking. Separate tickets may require you to collect and re-check luggage, which requires immigration clearance.

ℹ️ Note: Dubai is one of the most transit-friendly hubs for Indian passport holders. A paid 96-hour transit visa can be arranged through the airline for longer layovers.

Singapore flag Singapore Changi Airport (SIN)

  • Country: Singapore
  • Transit Zone: Non-Schengen
  • Max Airside Transit: 96 hours

Default Rule

Indian passport holders can transit through Singapore Changi without a visa for up to 96 hours, provided they hold a valid visa from an eligible country.

Exemptions

You do not need a transit visa if you:

  • Hold a valid visa issued by Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, or the United States
  • Hold a valid residence permit (equivalent to a long-term visa) from any of the above countries

⚠️ Terminal Change: All four terminals at Changi are connected airside via the Skytrain. No immigration clearance is needed for terminal transfers.

ℹ️ Note: Singapore's 96-hour VFTF is unusually generous. You can clear immigration and explore Singapore during the layover — it's not limited to airside.
